Read: Psalm 23
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1
When the challenges in life seem to overwhelm me because I have lost my focus on the Lord, I become a frightened and quivering lump of flesh, but not simply in body. I lose my focus in mind and spirit as well. At these times the knowledge within me, the faith I have been blessed with, cannot help me because I become spiritually and physically blind, unable to see that the answer and the peace I hunger for has been so clearly present all along. I can recall an evening when I was driving home very late in the night. I was so tired. The streets were poorly lit and suddenly it was as though I was in a completely unfamiliar place. I started to shake. “Where am I? How did I get here?” I kept moving but my tiredness became exhaustion and I grew more and more anxious. I was not on a highway. I was driving down a typical city street. I pulled over and parked the car. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath. I opened the car windows and let the blast of cool autumn air hit me full force. I found my irrational fear begin to subside and opened my eyes to look at my surroundings. I discovered that my panic brought on by my need for rest had blinded me to the fact that I was on a familiar street that had looked strange to me simply by the lack of daylight and realized I was not lost at all. The answer was there all along. I laughed at myself and drove the rest of the way home. In times of challenge in our spiritual life, the same is so often the case. The answer we cannot see is often plainly visible and when it is not, our faith tells us we are not alone.
PRAYER: Lead me and teach me, dear Lord, so that I will know your peace which lives within me and feel your strength in times of stormy weather as well as times of sunshine. Help me to reflect your joy at all times and in all places. Amen.
